The Project Management Workshop
has an approximately 17 hours of direct contact and a total of 4
to 6 hours of home work.
Discussion Topics:
- Why do we need to learn project management?
Suppose your company is developing a new product that is expected
to triplicate its market share if it can be delivered to the market
place in 8 months or less. You have been assigned to the team
responsible for the design of the product's packaging system.
After two weeks the project leader leaves the company and you
are assigned to lead the team since you are the best designer
of the group and have worked on other similar high profile projects.
You feel confident since you have a great deal of design experience
with similar products, then you wonder is working on a project
the same as leading a project team? Project Management is really
about leading a group of people to work and achieve a common goal.
Project Management, and management in general is not a technical
endeavor, it is mostly about working with people and making them
work in coordinated fashion to deliver the product on time and
within budget. Lucky for you, project management can be learned
and successfully applied.
- What really is a Project and what is Project Management? "Project
management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and
techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet the
requirements of the particular project. A project is a temporary
endeavor undertaken to achieve a particular aim." (Definition
of the Project Management Institute).
- How a project is managed, what is the project management process?
The typical Project Management Model has five steps (although
these are completed in a sequential fashion, they may be some
overlap back and forth).

As a Chinese proverb states "Tell me and I'll forget; show me
and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand", we believe
that the best way of learning something is by doing, practice
makes perfect. The participants will have the chance of working
with the project management process, so they are expected to develop
their project objective statement, the project plan,…etc. The
group will be divided in teams of 3 or 4 participants; each team
will be assigned a situation or problem to work on. For each task,
a team will be selected to present their work and the rest of
the group will provide suggestions and ask questions.
